The Backbone Alphabet

From a love affair with letter forms, fonts and graphic design, The Backbone Alphabet is a clever and whimsical, yet provocative exhibit that encourages a sense of play and discovery.

On a deeper level, it touches on philosophy, linguistics, art, science, history and more.  Through prints, poems and assemblage sculpture, one can explore unique themes of the 26 iconic symbols called “the alphabet.”  You’ll rediscover the joys of colors, shapes and interpretation through an eclectic experience from the mind of Martin.

Opening reception at Gallery C3 is Friday, July 7th from 7 to 10pm and will be on display through July 27th.

ARCHITECTONIC

Our upcoming exhibit, ARCHITECTONIC, features new works by Sharon Dowell, Matthew Steele and Chris Neyen.  Through painting, sculpture, photography and installation, this thought-provoking show combines the similar perspectives and varying styles of three different artists as they've observed explosive commercial development in the Charlotte community.  The opening reception is Friday, April 7th from 7 to 10pm and will be on display through April 28th.

Physical structure is the commonality that binds this exhibition together.  Matthew Steele’s new sculptural series explores history, memory, nostalgia and how social architecture influences those things.

In her paintings and installation, Sharon Dowell questions the boxing in of other people and the harnessing and destruction of nature; at the end of the day, what is it all for?

Chris Neyen’s photography reimagines our structural identity, reflecting that architecture and infrastructure create our surroundings and affect the conditions of our collective consciousness.

Movie Screening for 1984

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

On April 4, 2017, almost 90 art house movie theatres across the country in 79 cities and in 34 states, plus one location in Canada, will be participating collectively in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the 80's movie 1984 starring John Hurt, who sadly died last month. This date was chosen because it's the day George Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary.

These theaters owners also strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and see any attempt to scuttle that program as an attack on free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard.

Join the Charlotte Film Society at C3Lab at 7:30 to support this national movement.

Trans & Queer in the Workplace

Inspired by the San Francisco LGBT Center’s #TransAtWork campaign and the popular Humans of New York website, this photographic series spotlights Charlotte’s trans and gender non-conforming community, photographing individuals in their work environment and quoting their thoughts on their work experiences.  Lara was inspired to visually combine each subject’s thoughts and feelings with the person’s photograph to others could get a feel what the person is like and why their work is important to the community.

This Trans/Queer photographic series has been an ongoing project with Creative Loafing Charlotte publication and will be on display in Gallery C3 in conjunction with the Chrysalis Exhibit which open on January 6, 2017, from 7 to 10pm.  Gallery hours are Tues, Thurs & Fri - 11am to 5pm.  Weekends by appointment.

Chrysalis

Skin and bones are a cocoon for the soul to develop and grow on planet Earth. Chrysalis sheds that shell and peers into what’s hidden beneath.

Chrysalis is an exploration of what it means to inhabit a human body.  It is the study of this assortment of skin, bones, and fluid we call flesh. We feed it, we bathe it, we use it for an entire lifetime. We gather to welcome new life as it passes from a human womb. We gather once again when the body is returned to the Earth’s soil. Chrysalis is a celebration of the vehicle we use to experience the physical world and what it means to be alive on this planet.

Please join artist Lara Americo for the opening reception at Gallery C3 on Friday, January 6th from 7 to 10pm.  Exhibit will be on display through January 20th.  Gallery hours are Tues, Thurs & Fri - 11am to 5pm.  Weekends by appointment.
