Photo Exhibit

This is an exhibition of original works created by students in the Art Health Studio class at Central Piedmont Community College.

The studio course is designed to encourage and/ or support individuals who have concerns which limit their ability to express their creative interest in the visual arts. It is well established that the arts can demonstrate therapeutic impact on many conditions. What is offered here is not intended or represented to be art therapy; although through the use of traditional methods, some may experience therapeutic outcomes after participating in the studio.

Throughout this experience, students had the opportunity to use a range of media: graphite, colored pencil, watercolor, marker, and other materials to create the works you see exhibited. The theme and subject matter of these works are original concepts done by the artists.

Opening reception is December 16th from 7 to 8:30pm.  This Event will be in the Front Area of C3Lab. Exhibit runs through the end of the year.

GALLERY HOURS:  Tuesday-Friday 9am-3pm. Weekends by appointment only.  Closed Mondays.

Multimedia Art Exhibit

Dia de Los Casi Muertos Exhibit

The exhibition pays homage to the traditional Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” a time when family and friends gather to remember and celebrate the lives of friends and family members who have passed away.

Dia de Los Casi Muertos or Day of the Almost Dead is an ongoing multimedia project that explores the cultural differences between Mexican and American experiences with death and aging. Julio Gonzalez is a local Mexican–American artist that was born in the South, but raised with the tradition of Day of the Dead’s Catholic practices within his Mexican family. The aim of the project is for contemporary American society to examine their values by confronting the taboo of death – ultimately pushing us to appreciate the gift of life.

Through video, sculpture, and photography, the 2017 iteration of the Día de Los Casi Muertos project profiled community members, ages 30-40, of diverse backgrounds. Video interviews gave participants the opportunity to talk openly and candidly about their experiences with death. Participants had casts made of their faces which were painted and photographed in a traditional Day of the Dead style and include objects from their personal lives.

The opening reception for “Dia de Los Casi Muertos” will take place Tuesday, October 31st from 6 to 10:30pm with live performances by local band, Nouveau Sud.  Closing ceremony includes musical performances from local bands and XOXO on Friday, November 3rd from 7:30 to 11pm.  Free Admission.  For more information, visit www.WonderWhatIf.com

CALL FOR ART!

FUTURISM:  Art in the Age of Post Truth

This regional call for art is a follow-up to the 2016 DADA Soiree presented by C3Lab.  The theme “Futurism” could inspire references to the artists and architects of the revolutionary Italian art movement in the early 1900s who were fascinated by the problems of representing modern experience. Futurism celebrated advanced technology and urban modernity; it was committed to the idea of newness, and as part of this agenda its members wished to destroy older forms of culture.

Artists today might find parallels in our current situation, where radical ideologies are seeking to destroy established concepts of truth, objectivity, evidence, justice, and scientific rigor.

Opening Reception is Friday, November 10th from 7 to 10pm.  Exhibit will run through November 22nd.

Are We Humane

Figurative work that is drawn directly from the life going on around the artist, in the places they work and live, has the inevitable effect of creating a visual record of a city's literal and metaphorical landscapes, one that is unique to each artist.

Mark Doepker has been a creator his entire life, and many of the works can be seen as time capsules through the image or titles which bear reference to specific events.

Since 2014, Hannah Barnhardt has pursued drawing from life and urban sketching as a daily practice, compiling a visual archive of life, fashion trends, and the social scene of the Charlotte area, in bodies of work that speak to inequality, gentrification, and class division. Their overall hope is to promote a better understanding and appreciation for our fellow humans.

Opening reception at Gallery C3 is Friday, August 4th  from 7 to 10pm and will be on display through August 24thSpecial evening performances by James Lee Walker II.
